Terrorist Sentenced to Life in Prison following Christchurch Mosque Attack

Terrorist, Brenton Tarrant was sentenced to life in prison, for the attack he carried out at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand in March, 2019. Using semiautomatic weapons and assault rifles, Tarrant stormed into two separate mosques during their prayer time, killing 51 people.

Tarrant appeared in court today and was charged for 51 counts of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one count of carrying out a terrorist act. The 29-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment and was given no option for parole.

In the courtroom, the man remained silent for the entirety of the case and did not speak unless required to. Tarrant showed no signs of remorse for his horrific acts.

Victims of the attack spoke in court, to explain how much their lives changed after that day and how it had impacted them since. Multiple victims called Tarrant names such as the devil and a coward, and stated that he deserved to be in prison for the rest of his life, while the attacker remained emotionless.


Outside of the court, families of victims and supporters gathered together, waiting to hear the verdict for the white supremacist’s case with signs and posters supporting the local community.

New Zealand is named as one of the safest countries in the world, with very low crime rates. This extreme act of violence has been named as the deadliest criminal act to occcur in New Zealand’s modern day history.
